Jetstar is grounding flights again as the volcanic ash cloud continues its second circuit of the globe and into New Zealand airspace.

The as cloud from Chile's Mt Puyehue Cordon Caulle has caused travel chao in New Zealand and Australia and is still stranding thousands of travellers on this side of the Tasman.

Jetstar's domestic and trans-Tasman flights have been grounded until at least midday.

Updates about afternoon services will be provided later on this morning.

Jetstar say it is closely monitoring the ash cloud in conjunction with the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre and the Bureau of Meteorology.

Air New Zealand domestic and international flights are operating as normal. The airline says it is safe to fly below 24,000 feet.

All trans-Tasman Qantas flights are cancelled today as are those of Pacific Blue.

Ash cloud lowers

Civil Aviation Authority meteorology manager Peter Lechner says the ash cloud's height has reduced to 18,000 thousand feet because of a deepening depression in the Tasman Sea.

He said the ash cloud is still covering the whole of the country but is expected to slowly move off from early this evening.

Lechner said while the ash could is lower, aircraft can still fly under it, but it is up to individual airlines to decide whether to do so.

'Operating dangerously'

Meanwhile, Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe has batted off claims by Qantas boss Alan Joyce that New Zealand's national carrier is operating dangerously by continuing to fly in the ash cloud.

Fyfe has dismissed those claims as malicious rumours.

He said the ash clouds could return on and off for months to come and the airline will continue to take a similar approach.
